Amazon is expanding its faster delivery service in more cities across the United States, including Los Angeles and Chicago, as it tries to stay ahead of growing competition from Walmart.
Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations, Udit Madan, said the company is using its delivery network and operational experience to make shopping easier for customers while giving Prime members more value.
Amazon said its 1-hour delivery option is now available for more than 90,000 products, including household essentials, toys, and toilet paper. This service uses the company’s current same-day delivery network and has started in major US metro areas as well as smaller cities like Boise, Idaho. Its 3-hour delivery service is now available in more than 2,000 cities and towns. Fresh groceries are also included in some areas.
To make these orders move faster, Amazon has added special workstations inside its same-day delivery centers. It is also using yellow labels on packages for faster identification and has updated signs inside its facilities to help delivery workers handle these orders more quickly.
The faster shipping service comes with an extra cost. Prime members pay $9.99 for 1-hour delivery and $4.99 for 3-hour delivery. Customers without Prime pay $19.99 for 1-hour shipping and $14.99 for 3-hour delivery.
