X has introduced a new algorithm update designed to make conversations on the platform feel more personal by showing users more content from people they mutually follow.

The change comes after the company acknowledged that a missing ranking signal caused replies from friends to appear less often, leaving conversations dominated by unfamiliar accounts.

Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, said the platform is rolling out a tweak that boosts the visibility of posts and replies from mutual followers—users who follow each other back. According to him, the missing data made reply sections feel more like a “battleground” filled with strangers instead of meaningful discussions among friends and communities.

The update is also expected to help users build stronger interest-based communities by making it easier for people with shared interests to discover and interact with one another. X believes this will create a more engaging and community-focused experience while reducing the prominence of random accounts in conversations.

The algorithm tweak follows other recent changes on X aimed at improving content quality. The platform recently said it would give greater visibility to original content creators, addressing concerns that recycled or copied posts had been receiving too much exposure.

The move also reflects a broader trend across social media, with platforms like Threads and Bluesky increasingly focusing on smaller, interest-driven communities instead of large public discussions. As competition grows, X appears to be shifting its recommendation system to encourage more meaningful interactions between people who already know each other or share common interests.
