X (formerly Twitter) is hitting the pause button on its encrypted direct messages (DMs).
According to a post from the company’s engineering team, the feature is being temporarily disabled “while we work on making some improvements.”
Users will still be able to read their previously sent encrypted DMs, but they won’t be able to send new ones during this pause.
Starting today we will be pausing the encrypted DMs feature while we work on making some improvements. You will still be able to access your encrypted DMs, but won't be able to send new ones.

X first rolled out encrypted DMs in May 2023, but the feature came with some limitations. This update suggests that the company is now working to fix or upgrade those aspects.
There’s no word yet on when encrypted DMs will return, but it’s clear that X wants to improve the privacy tools it offers before turning them back on.
