Snapchat is changing how content is promoted on Spotlight by no longer rewarding videos created entirely with artificial intelligence.
The company says the move is designed to prioritize authentic, human-made content as social media platforms continue to battle the growing wave of low-quality AI-generated posts, often referred to as “AI slop.”
Creators can still use Snapchat’s AI-powered editing and creative tools to enhance their videos, but content that is fully generated by AI will no longer receive recommendation boosts on Spotlight. Snapchat wants creators to use AI as a creative assistant rather than letting it replace original storytelling and personal expression.
The update is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of content users see in their feeds. As generative AI tools become more accessible, platforms have been flooded with mass-produced videos and images, prompting companies to rethink how recommendation systems work. Snapchat believes emphasizing genuine creator content will lead to a better experience for both viewers and creators.
The company also announced new privacy protections for younger users. Spotlight posts from accounts belonging to users aged 13 to 15 will only be visible to people they follow back, reducing the risk of unwanted exposure and helping protect teens from issues such as doxxing and online harassment.
Snapchat joins a growing list of technology companies taking steps to limit the spread of low-quality AI content. Several major platforms have recently introduced new policies aimed at promoting authentic content while encouraging responsible use of AI-powered creative tools.
