Apple is planning a big change in how it names its major operating systems, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Instead of simply increasing the version number (like going from iOS 18 to iOS 19), Apple will now use the year as the version number, similar to how car models are named.

For example, the next big iOS update won’t be called iOS 19. It’ll be called iOS 26 — even though it’s being released in 2025. The number will represent the following year, not the current one. This change will apply to all of Apple’s major platforms, including iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26.

Apple plans to announce this change during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which starts on June 9th. The goal is to make version names more consistent across devices. Currently, they’re all over the place — for example, iOS is at version 18, watchOS is at 10, and visionOS is at 2.

At the same event, Apple is also expected to reveal a fresh new design for its software. The redesign is reportedly inspired by VisionOS, the system that powers the Vision Pro headset.

WWDC will begin with a keynote on June 9th at 1 PM ET.
