X is ending its current revenue-sharing program for content creators and replacing it with a new system called Original Content Rewards.
The new program will officially launch on September 8 and is designed to put more emphasis on creators who publish original work rather than those who rely on reposts, replies, clickbait or other ways of maximizing payouts.
To qualify for Original Content Rewards, creators will need at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users during the previous 90 days, along with other requirements.
Under the new system, creators will earn money based on what X calls “qualified impressions.” These are unique impressions from Premium subscribers on the Home Timeline where at least half of a post is visible.
X says original content can include original reporting and analysis, videos and photos created by the user, graphics, illustrations and memes. Commentary and reaction posts can also qualify if they add something meaningful to the conversation.
The company says the change is intended to address problems with the existing revenue-sharing system, which has gone through several revisions since Elon Musk took over the platform. X believes the previous model created incentives for some users to focus more on finding loopholes and generating engagement than producing genuinely useful content.
Allegra Jacchia, Senior Product Manager for Creators at SpaceXAI, said the new program is intended to reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, creativity and unique perspectives to X rather than those who have become skilled at gaming the system.
The existing revenue-sharing program will not end immediately. Creators currently participating in it will continue receiving revenue through September 7, after which the new Original Content Rewards program will take over.
The change represents another major shift in how X approaches creator monetization. For creators, the biggest difference could be the increased importance of producing content that is genuinely their own rather than simply repackaging material that already exists elsewhere on the platform.
