WhatsApp is replacing Tenor with GIPHY for GIF searches after Tenor officially shut down its public GIF API, ensuring users can continue sharing animated images without interruption.

The change is being rolled out on both Android and iOS devices. Users will continue to access GIFs directly within WhatsApp, but the results will now come from GIPHY instead of Tenor.

Tenor’s API shutdown meant apps relying on its GIF search service needed to migrate to another provider to keep the feature working. By switching to GIPHY, WhatsApp aims to provide a seamless experience without affecting how users search for and send GIFs in chats.

For most users, the transition will happen in the background and will not require any action. The GIF search interface will remain largely the same, although users may notice different search results or a broader selection of animations since the content is now powered by GIPHY.

The migration is being rolled out gradually, so some users may continue seeing Tenor-powered results until the update reaches their devices. Once the rollout is complete, GIPHY will become the default GIF provider for WhatsApp on both Android and iOS.
