WhatsApp has started rolling out a new translation feature for iPhone and Android users that lets you translate messages directly in the app.

The feature, which is gradually becoming available starting today, works in 1:1 chats, group conversations, and Channel updates. To use it, simply long-press on a message and tap the “Translate” option to select the language you want to translate from or to.

On Android, support for English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic is available at launch, along with the option to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads. iPhone users, meanwhile, get support for more than 19 languages right from the start, making the rollout on Apple devices slightly broader.

The tool doesn’t provide real-time translation in audio or visual form, but it makes conversations much easier for WhatsApp’s billions of users across different regions. Similar features have been available on other messaging apps for years, but WhatsApp’s massive global reach means this update could have a bigger impact. The company also confirmed that more languages will be supported in future updates.
