Microsoft is introducing a new protection feature in Teams that stops people from taking screenshots or making screen recordings during meetings.

The feature is available for Teams Premium customers and is designed to protect sensitive information shared in online discussions.

Microsoft first announced this update in May 2025 and planned to release it in July. However, the rollout was pushed back and is now going live in early November. The feature is called Prevent screen capture, and it limits who can view visual meeting content by blocking attempts to capture the screen on Windows computers and Android devices. It also stops most third-party tools from recording the meeting window.

When someone tries to take a screenshot on a Windows device, they will only see a black rectangle around the meeting window. On Android phones and tablets, users will instead see a message saying that screen capture is restricted. For platforms that do not support this protection, Teams will only allow participants to join the meeting with audio.

The option is turned off by default. Meeting organizers and co-organizers must enable it manually in the Meeting Options section. Administrators can handle device enrollment and licensing for Teams Premium through Entra ID. Microsoft said in a message center update that the new feature will be fully available by late November 2025 for Premium users.

It is important to understand that this protection is not perfect. Even though the feature blocks built in screen capture and most apps, someone could still take a photo of their screen with an external camera during the meeting.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp released a similar tool called Advanced Chat Privacy. It prevents users from exporting chat history or saving certain shared media in private and group conversations, giving people more control over their sensitive information.

Microsoft has also been working on improving security inside Teams. The company is adding better protection against harmful files and dangerous links shared in chats and channels. Teams will now warn people if they try to send or receive a message that includes a link known to be unsafe.
