Vimeo has started laying off employees across its global workforce, according to a report from Business Insider.
The job cuts come shortly after Vimeo was acquired by Italian tech conglomerate Bending Spoons in an all-cash deal valued at $1.38 billion last year.
Bending Spoons confirmed the layoffs but did not disclose how many employees are affected. However, The Verge reports that the reductions impact a “large portion” of Vimeo’s workforce, citing a LinkedIn post from the company’s former VP of Global Brand and Creative, who said he was laid off along with many colleagues.
Founded in 2004, Vimeo has long struggled to compete in a market dominated by YouTube. In recent years, the company shifted its focus toward AI-powered tools, announcing plans in 2023 to introduce AI-based scriptwriting and video-editing features. In October, Vimeo expanded this strategy by launching new creator tools designed to integrate video content directly into AI workflows.
Bending Spoons has built a reputation for acquiring and restructuring established tech platforms. Its previous acquisitions include Meetup, Evernote, and WeTransfer, signaling a continued push to consolidate and optimize mature digital services.
