Tumblr has rolled back its recent reblog update after many users reacted negatively to the changes.

The update originally allowed people to like, reblog, and reply to individual posts inside a reblog chain. It also gave each version of a reblog its own note count instead of showing one combined total for the full chain.

Many users did not like the new system. One of the biggest complaints was that it changed the classic reblog chain layout that has been a major part of Tumblr’s identity for years. Instead of feeling like Tumblr, many users said the new design looked too similar to platforms like X, Bluesky, and Threads.

Users also worried that the update would make reblog chains harder to read and follow. Some creators were concerned too, saying they might miss likes, comments, and shares on reblogged versions of their posts because notifications would no longer work in the same way.

After the backlash, Tumblr announced that it was reversing the changes. The company said user reactions were strong and made it clear that the rollout created problems that need to be fixed before moving ahead. Tumblr added that it still believes there is a better way to improve reblogs, but it now wants more community input before making further changes.

The response shows how important reblog chains are to Tumblr users and how closely the platform’s community watches any major changes to its core features.
