Apple has started rolling out its first background security update for iPhones, iPads, and Macs to fix a Safari-related bug.

The company said the issue was found in WebKit, the browser engine used by Safari and many other apps. If this flaw were abused, a harmful website could possibly access data from another website open in the same browser session.

Apple says these background security improvements are small and fast updates that deliver important security fixes between major software releases. They are meant to handle certain problems without waiting for a full operating system update.

This new update is available on devices running the latest software, including iOS, iPadOS, and macOS version 26.1 or later. Apple says these lightweight updates can fix parts of the system such as Safari, WebKit, and other important libraries that may need regular protection updates.

Apple did not explain why it chose to patch this particular bug right now. A company spokesperson also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

After installing the update, only a quick restart was needed. This is much faster than the longer reboot process users usually see with larger software updates.

Before this public release, Apple had already tested the background security update system by sending several security fixes to software testers.
