Spotify has introduced a new feature called Exclusive Mode for its Windows app.

It is available for Premium users and is designed to improve sound quality by giving the app full control over audio output.

Normally, a computer can change audio before it reaches your DAC. This can happen through resampling, mixing in system sounds, or adjusting volume. With Exclusive Mode turned on, Spotify says this process is avoided, making bit-perfect playback possible.

To use it, open the Spotify app on Windows, go to Settings, then choose Playback. From there, select your audio device in the Output section and switch on Exclusive Mode.

There are a few limits to keep in mind. While this mode is active, sound from other apps will not play through the same device. Spotify’s automix and crossfade features also will not work.

This update answers a long-standing request from Spotify users who have wanted a playback option similar to what services like Tidal and Amazon Music already offer. Spotify says Mac support will arrive in a future release.

The feature comes after Spotify added a lossless audio option in September, giving listeners another way to enjoy better sound quality on the platform.
