Meta’s X rival, Threads, has officially rolled out direct messaging (DMs) to all users.
The new feature allows private one-on-one conversations, but for now, you can only send messages to people who follow you or are mutual followers on Instagram.
To send a DM on Threads, tap the envelope icon on the bottom toolbar of the app, then use the pencil icon in the top-right corner of the inbox to start a message. The feature is currently available to users aged 18 and older on Android, iOS, and the web.

Threads plans to expand the feature soon by allowing users to control who can message them, including those outside their follower list, and by adding a message request folder, similar to X. Group chats and inbox filters are also in the works.
While Threads says its messaging system is protected by Meta’s privacy and safety infrastructure, a spokesperson confirmed that DMs on Threads are not end-to-end encrypted. Meta says it will continue improving messaging based on user feedback. Threads first began testing DMs in June.
Alongside DMs, Threads also introduced a “highlighter” feature, which highlights unique posts that spark thoughtful conversation. This will first appear in the For You feed and other content discovery areas, with broader rollout coming soon.
