The Government of Nepal has decided to block all social media platforms that are not registered with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The move comes after the deadline for mandatory listing expired last night, following a Cabinet decision made on Bhadra 9 (August 25).

So far, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, WeTalk, and OpoLive have completed the registration process. These five platforms will continue to run without interruption. Additionally, Telegram and Global Link are still in the process of being registered and may remain available once they are approved.

But popular platforms such as Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Snapchat, Reddit, Discord, Pinterest, Signal, Threads, WeChat, Quora, Tumblr, Clubhouse, Mastodon, Rumble, MeWe, VK, Line, IMO, Zalo, Soul, and Hamro Patro will now be restricted across Nepal until they comply with the government’s rules.

Officials say the decision follows a Supreme Court order to regulate online platforms. The ministry also clarified that if any of these platforms complete the registration process in the future, they will be allowed to operate again. For now, users in Nepal should prepare for limited access to their favorite apps and services.
