Tesla has been found partly responsible for a deadly crash involving its Autopilot system. A jury in Florida has ordered the company to pay $243 million in damages to the victims’ families.

The case was related to a 2019 accident where a Tesla Model S, using Autopilot, ran a stop sign and crashed into a parked car. A 22-year-old woman named Naibel Benavides Leon died in the crash, and her boyfriend Dillon Angulo was seriously injured.

Even though the driver admitted he was looking at his phone at the time, the jury decided that Tesla shared part of the blame. The company will pay one-third of the total damages, while the driver is responsible for the rest.

This is the first time Tesla has been found legally liable by a jury in a fatal Autopilot-related case. It could lead to more legal action against Tesla over its driver-assistance features.

Tesla is expected to appeal the decision, saying the driver was fully at fault and misused the Autopilot system.
