Roblox is rolling out a major change that will affect how users access games on its platform, especially younger players.
Soon, anyone who wants to play games designed for users aged nine and above will need to go through an age verification process. This update is part of a broader shift toward new account types called Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, each offering different levels of safety and access depending on a user’s age.
The move comes as Roblox continues to face criticism and legal pressure over child safety concerns. In response, the company has been steadily adding new protections, such as stricter controls on inappropriate content, improved parental tools, and mandatory age checks for chat features. According to Roblox, more than half of its 144 million daily users have already completed some form of age verification.
With the new system in place, users identified as being between five and eight years old, or those who skip the verification process entirely, will be placed into Roblox Kids accounts. These accounts are limited to games labeled with “Minimal” or “Mild” content, and chat is turned off by default. However, parents can choose to allow their child to communicate with specific approved individuals.
For older children, Roblox Select accounts will be assigned to users aged nine to 15. These accounts open access to games with “Moderate” content ratings and gradually introduce chat features depending on the user’s age. Roblox says this approach is designed to balance freedom and safety as kids grow older on the platform.
Parents who connect their accounts with their child’s profile will also have the option to set or confirm their child’s age, giving them more control over the experience. Overall, Roblox is clearly trying to create a more structured and safer environment while still allowing users to explore and enjoy its vast library of games.
