Longtime fans of old.reddit.com can breathe a sigh of relief. Despite growing concerns that Reddit would retire its classic interface in favor of the newer design, CEO Steve Huffman has confirmed that the old layout will remain, at least for now.
In a blog post titled “Reddit’s Next Chapter”, Huffman (aka spez) briefly joked that Reddit would be “sunsetting” old Reddit at the end of the month, calling it “ugly af” and hard to maintain. But immediately after the shocking line, he clarified: “Just kidding… We’ll figure out how to work around it and keep it online as long as people are using it.”
Beyond the joke, Huffman outlined several key changes coming to Reddit, including core product improvements like easier subreddit creation and updates to r/popular. He also emphasized shifting moderators’ roles from “policing” to community cultivation, supported by better tools and AI-driven automation.
Reddit also plans to enhance user verification in response to regulatory changes. Users may soon be asked to confirm whether they’re human and, in some regions, verify their age—but without sharing personal details like names. “We never want to know your name or who you are,” Huffman said, emphasizing Reddit’s commitment to anonymity.
Additionally, Reddit announced upgrades to Reddit Chat, including a new allowlist feature. This comes as Reddit begins phasing out traditional private messages in favor of its real-time chat platform.
