OpenAI is rolling out a major upgrade to ChatGPT that significantly enhances users’ ability to search through past conversations, although this feature is currently limited to Plus and Pro subscribers.
While ChatGPT has long allowed users to search chat history, the tool has often struggled to surface the right conversation, especially when multiple threads cover similar topics. OpenAI says the new update addresses this limitation by enabling ChatGPT to more reliably find specific details from past chats when users ask follow-up questions. When a previous conversation is used to generate an answer, it will now appear as a source, allowing users to open and review the original context.
The enhanced chat history search is part of a broader set of improvements to ChatGPT. The most recent major update arrived in December, when OpenAI introduced customizable personalities that let users fine-tune how ChatGPT responds. Through the personalization settings, users can adjust traits such as warmth, enthusiasm, the use of headers and lists, and how often emojis appear in responses.
Alongside these changes, OpenAI is also improving dictation features for all logged-in users, reducing empty transcriptions and boosting overall accuracy, making voice input more reliable across the platform.
