Pinterest is finally taking steps to tackle the flood of AI-generated content that’s overwhelming its platform.
In response to growing user backlash, the company announced on Wednesday that it will begin labeling AI-generated and AI-modified images, while also giving users the option to filter out AI Pins in certain content categories.
The move comes after months of complaints from users frustrated by low-quality AI images — often dubbed “AI slop” — saturating popular boards, especially in areas like art, beauty, and fashion. Pinterest said it would use a combination of metadata analysis and AI classifiers to identify AI content. Labeled images will include an “AI modified” tag when viewed up close.
In addition, a new “see fewer” option will soon appear in the three-dot menu on AI Pins, allowing users to reduce the volume of generative content in their feeds. Pinterest says this feature will initially roll out to a few categories before expanding more broadly.
The company also noted that creators can appeal if their work is wrongly labeled. CTO Matt Madrigal emphasized that Pinterest still sees potential in generative AI as a source of inspiration — if implemented responsibly.
