OpenAI’s ChatGPT is reportedly on the verge of reaching a major milestone, with weekly active users expected to surpass the 1 billion mark in the near future.
According to a report from Chinese technology publication 36Kr, the AI chatbot is now close to achieving the milestone after falling behind its original internal target.
The report says OpenAI had initially hoped ChatGPT would exceed 1 billion weekly active users by the end of last year. While the goal is now estimated to be around seven months behind schedule, the chatbot’s growth has remained exceptionally strong, making it one of the fastest-growing internet products ever launched.
Since its public debut in late 2022, ChatGPT has rapidly expanded from a conversational AI assistant into a platform that supports writing, coding, image generation, research, education, and business productivity. The service has also benefited from continuous upgrades, including more powerful AI models, multimodal capabilities, enterprise offerings, and deeper integrations across OpenAI’s products.
Reaching nearly 1 billion weekly active users in less than four years would place ChatGPT among the fastest-growing consumer internet services in history, highlighting the accelerating global adoption of generative AI by individuals, businesses, developers, and educational institutions.
