OpenAI has announced that it is shutting down Sora, its short-form video app that launched just six months ago.
The company confirmed the decision through its official X account but did not provide a clear reason or timeline for when the app will be fully discontinued.
We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.

We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on…
Sora was introduced as an AI-first social platform designed to resemble TikTok, featuring a vertical video feed powered entirely by AI-generated content. Early access to the app created strong demand, with many users eager to receive invites. However, the initial excitement did not last, and user engagement declined over time.
While the app is being discontinued, the underlying Sora 2 model for video and audio generation will continue to exist within OpenAI’s ecosystem. It is currently available through ChatGPT’s paid features, meaning the technology itself is not going away.
