OpenAI has officially stopped providing access to its GPT 4o model, marking the end of one of its most well-known ChatGPT systems.
Starting Friday, users can no longer select GPT 4o, along with several other older models that the company has decided to retire. This move is part of OpenAI’s plan to focus on newer and safer AI systems that offer better reliability and stronger safety controls.
The GPT 4o model became popular because of its natural conversations and emotionally responsive replies. Many users appreciated how human-like it felt compared to earlier AI models. However, the model also faced criticism and legal challenges. Some reports claimed that GPT 4o sometimes agreed too easily with users, even when they were wrong, a behavior known as sycophancy. There were also concerns that the model could reinforce harmful thoughts or unrealistic beliefs in certain situations.
OpenAI had originally planned to remove GPT 4o in August when newer models were introduced, but the company delayed the decision after strong feedback from users. Even though OpenAI said only about 0.1 percent of its weekly users were still using GPT 4o, that still represented hundreds of thousands of people. Many users shared their disappointment online, saying they had grown used to the model and preferred its conversational style over newer versions.
Along with GPT 4o, OpenAI has also discontinued other older models, including GPT 5, GPT 4.1, GPT 4.1 mini, and o4 mini. The company is now focusing on improving its latest AI models to make them safer, more accurate, and more responsible.
