OpenAI has announced a major update to its image generation tools with the launch of a new model called GPT Image 1.5 and a redesigned interface inside ChatGPT.

The company says the new model is faster, more accurate, and better at understanding what users want. It is now available to all users.

According to OpenAI, the new image generator can follow instructions more closely and handle photo edits more naturally. This includes changing specific parts of an image, editing existing photos, and applying creative styles while keeping the original look and feel intact. The company says the results can be generated up to four times faster than before.

One of the biggest improvements is how well the model understands user intent. OpenAI explains that the system now does a better job when users want to modify an existing image, such as trying different clothes or hairstyles, applying visual filters, or making creative transformations without losing the core details of the original photo.

Along with the new model, OpenAI has added a dedicated Images tab in the ChatGPT sidebar. This new section includes ready-made filters, trending prompts, and creative ideas to help users get started more easily.

OpenAI is also highlighting the business value of these updates. The company says the new image tools are especially useful for professional and enterprise use, such as product images, marketing visuals, and work-related designs. This move is part of OpenAI’s broader effort to grow revenue as competition in AI image generation continues to increase.

The race to build better image generators has intensified recently, especially after the viral popularity of Google’s Nano Banana model. OpenAI says its latest update represents a shift away from fun experiments toward practical, high-quality visual creation that people can use in real-world situations.

In its announcement, OpenAI described the update as turning ChatGPT into a flexible creative studio that can handle everyday image edits, expressive visual changes, and professional-quality results. Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, also shared that the new image features are designed to work like a full creative workspace rather than a simple image tool.
