OpenAI has quietly introduced a new feature called ChatGPT Translate, and it closely resembles Google Translate on the web at first glance.

The tool is already live and available to everyone, including users on free accounts, even though OpenAI has not made any official announcement about its launch.

ChatGPT Translate can be accessed directly by visiting chatgpt.com/translate. The feature allows users to translate text using ChatGPT in a simple, dedicated interface. While it looks familiar, it goes far beyond basic word-for-word translation.

OpenAI’s recent direction shows a stronger focus on consumer-facing products, while competitors like Anthropic are putting more attention on enterprise tools and software developers. ChatGPT Translate fits clearly into that consumer strategy, offering an easy and flexible way for anyone to translate content.

With this new tool, users can type or paste text, upload images such as signs or menus, speak directly into the app, or attach files for translation. The tool can automatically detect the language or let users manually choose both the source and target languages. Once translated, the result aims to preserve the true meaning of the text rather than producing a literal translation.

One of the standout features is how customizable the translation is. Users can ask ChatGPT to make the translation more fluent, more formal for business use, suitable for an academic audience, or simple enough for a child to understand. This level of control is something traditional translation tools usually do not offer.

Another major difference is that the translation does not end after one result. Users can continue the conversation, ask for revisions, request explanations, or refine the tone and style further, all within the same session.

It is not yet clear which ChatGPT model is powering the Translate feature. OpenAI has not confirmed whether it uses GPT 5.2 Auto with a custom translation prompt or a different setup entirely. Despite the lack of details, the tool works smoothly and does not require a paid subscription.

For now, ChatGPT Translate appears to be limited to the web version. The Android and iOS apps do not yet show a toggle or shortcut to start the translation feature directly. Still, its quiet rollout suggests OpenAI is testing how users respond before making a broader announcement.
