After months of silence, OpenAI appears to be working on a major update to its generative video model. References to “Sora 2” have been spotted on OpenAI’s servers, suggesting that a successor to the original Sora is in development.

Sora, which debuted on December 9, 2024, was once hailed as a major leap in AI video generation. But since then, Google’s Veo 3 has taken center stage, especially after its integration with Gemini AI Pro and recent rollout as a free tool for college students.

While Sora was recently added to Bing Video Creator for free, bringing it back into the spotlight, it hasn’t seen significant updates in over six months. Now, with internal signs pointing to Sora 2, OpenAI may be planning a comeback in the competitive world of AI-generated video.

Although Sora 2 isn’t publicly available yet, sources indicate that OpenAI could reveal more details in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, users interested in Veo 3 can access it via Google Cloud’s free credit and Vertex AI‘s development mode, unless they qualify for the Gemini AI Pro student offering.
