OpenAI has introduced its new GPT-5.5 model, calling it the company’s smartest and most intuitive model so far.
The launch comes just one month after GPT-5.4 and marks another step in OpenAI’s push to make AI more useful for everyday computer-based work.
According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 performs especially well in writing and debugging code, online research, creating spreadsheets, and preparing documents. The company said the model is designed to handle messy and complex tasks without users needing to guide every step manually.
OpenAI said users can give GPT-5.5 multi-part requests and trust it to plan tasks, use tools, check its own work, handle unclear situations, and continue working toward the goal. The company also said the model includes its strongest safeguards yet.
Another key upgrade is efficiency. OpenAI said GPT-5.5 uses significantly fewer tokens while working in Codex, which could improve speed and reduce costs for coding tasks.
GPT-5.5 started rolling out on Thursday to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, as well as Codex users. A separate GPT-5.5 Pro version is also coming to Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.
The release adds more competition between OpenAI and Anthropic as both companies race to lead the AI market. Anthropic recently launched Claude Opus 4.7 and introduced Mythos Preview, a private cybersecurity-focused model. OpenAI also responded earlier with GPT-5.4-Cyber, aimed at detecting cybersecurity vulnerabilities.
Both companies are also focusing heavily on AI coding tools and enterprise software, two areas seen as major revenue opportunities.

The GPT-5.5 launch also arrives shortly before a major court case involving Elon Musk and OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman. Trial proceedings are scheduled to begin Monday in a federal courtroom in Oakland.
