OpenAI is introducing a major new feature for ChatGPT — the ability to use third-party apps directly within the chatbot.

With the new ChatGPT SDK, software developers can now connect their services to ChatGPT, allowing users to access and interact with those apps while the AI provides context, assistance, and advice.

In a live demo, an OpenAI employee showcased how seamlessly this works. The presenter asked ChatGPT, via Canva, to design a poster for a dog-walking business. Moments later, Canva generated multiple design options within ChatGPT itself. The employee then took it a step further, asking the chatbot to create a pitch deck based on the poster, demonstrating how apps and ChatGPT can collaborate in a single workflow.

Another demo highlighted how ChatGPT can query Zillow to display homes for sale in Pittsburgh, presenting an interactive Zillow map that users could explore and follow up with specific questions.

As of today, several apps are already available inside ChatGPT, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. OpenAI says additional apps — such as DoorDash, OpenTable, Target, and Uber — will be added in the coming weeks. The expansion follows recent integrations like the ability for ChatGPT users to make Etsy purchases directly through the chatbot, part of OpenAI’s broader goal to connect ChatGPT with the wider web ecosystem.

Developers can now access the ChatGPT SDK in preview, enabling them to build and test integrations. Later this year, OpenAI plans to open submissions for app review and publication, alongside launching an app directory where users can browse available tools.
