Microsoft has announced that it will stop using engineers based in China to support its cloud computing services for the U.S. Department of Defense.

The decision follows a report by ProPublica that raised serious concerns about national security.

According to the report, Microsoft previously relied on Chinese engineers to help maintain systems used by the Pentagon. U.S. citizens supervised these engineers with security clearance, but many lacked the technical expertise to properly monitor the work being done.

In response, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on X, “Foreign engineers — from any country, including, of course, China, should never be allowed to maintain or access DoD systems.”

Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, responded on Friday: “Microsoft has made changes to our support for U.S. government customers to ensure that no China-based engineering teams are providing technical assistance for Department of Defense cloud and related services.”
