Microsoft will begin automatically installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot app on Windows devices with Microsoft 365 desktop client apps starting next month.

The rollout, which excludes systems in the European Economic Area (EEA), will begin in early October and finish by mid-November.

The new app serves as a central hub for Copilot experiences, providing quick access to AI-powered tools across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft 365 apps, as well as Notebooks and AI agents. Once installed, the app will appear in the Windows Start Menu and be enabled by default.

Microsoft is urging IT administrators to inform users and helpdesk teams ahead of the forced installation to avoid confusion and support requests. Admins who want to block the rollout can opt out through the Microsoft 365 Apps Admin Center by navigating to:

  • Customization > Device Configuration > Modern App Settings
  • Select Microsoft 365 Copilot app
  • Uncheck Enable automatic installation

While many users may notice a new Copilot icon in the Start menu, Microsoft notes that the app may already be present on some systems, so changes could be minimal.
