Microsoft has begun rolling out a public preview of threaded conversations in its Teams app, delivering on a long-awaited promise to enhance communication within channels.

Originally slated for mid-2025, the feature is now available for users to test.

The new threaded conversation view allows users to follow discussions that matter most and bring key updates back into the main chat. Unlike Slack, however, Teams threads aren’t created on the fly — channel owners must choose between a “posts” or “threads” layout, depending on how they want conversations structured.

To help manage conversations, Microsoft has introduced a “Followed Threads” view, where users can easily keep track of active discussions. By default, you’ll follow threads you’ve started, replied to, been mentioned in, or manually followed — and you can unfollow noisy ones with a click.

Alongside threads, Teams is also adding support for multiple emoji reactions per message, now live in the public preview. Additionally, Microsoft is enhancing slash commands, including the ability to search for GIFs using /gif.
