Twitter co-founder and Block Head Jack Dorsey has introduced a new messaging app called Bitchat, designed to function entirely without internet or cellular networks

The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networking to enable encrypted, peer-to-peer communication between nearby devices.

According to a white paper on Dorsey’s GitHub, Bitchat was built to support resilient and private communication that bypasses centralized infrastructure. Messages are relayed through nearby devices to extend the range beyond direct Bluetooth connections, offering up to 300 meters (984 feet) in coverage. Future updates aim to improve speed and range through Wi-Fi Direct.

The app requires no accounts or servers and includes strong privacy features such as password-protected channels and a “Panic Mode” that instantly wipes all data if the logo is tapped three times. Screenshots shared by Dorsey confirm the app collects no user data.

Bitchat is currently available to beta testers through Apple TestFlight, though the program has hit its 10,000-user limit. The app is still under review ahead of a wider release.
