Microsoft has released an emergency update to fix a serious problem affecting some Windows 11 systems after installing the May 2025 security update (KB5058405).
The issue caused affected computers to fail to start, sending them into recovery mode with a 0xc0000098 error related to the ACPI.sys file, which is essential for power and device management in Windows.
The problem mainly affects enterprise environments running Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, especially virtual machines hosted on Azure, Azure Virtual Desktop, Citrix, or Hyper-V. Microsoft confirmed that home users running Windows 11 Home or Pro are unlikely to experience this issue, as it primarily targets virtual desktop setups used by IT departments.
Microsoft first acknowledged the issue on May 13, 2025, and over the weekend, it released a non-security out-of-band (OOB) update, KB5062170, to resolve the problem.
This emergency update is available through the Microsoft Update Catalog and must be installed manually.
The company recommends that Azure users who are already affected use Azure Virtual Machine repair commands to fix the issue.

For those who have not yet installed the original May security update but use virtual desktops in their setup, Microsoft suggests skipping KB5058405 and applying the new OOB update instead.
