Microsoft has fixed a known Windows 11 issue that caused the May 2026 security update to fail during installation with the error code 0x800f0922.
The problem affected users trying to install the KB5089549 security update. According to Microsoft, the failures were linked to low free space on the EFI System Partition, also known as ESP. When there was not enough space available, the update could not complete properly and Windows automatically rolled back the changes.
Affected users saw a message saying “Something didn’t go as planned. Undoing changes.” during the rollback process. Some devices also showed log entries such as “SpaceCheck” and “ServicingBootFiles failed,” which pointed to insufficient free space on the EFI System Partition.
Microsoft said the issue mainly affected devices with very limited ESP storage, especially systems with 10 MB or less free space available. On these devices, the update could begin normally but fail during the reboot phase, usually when the installation reached around 35 to 36 percent.
The company said the problem has now been resolved in the Windows 11 KB5089573 preview cumulative update. The same fix will also be available to all users through the June Patch Tuesday updates later this month.
Microsoft said users who install the May 26, 2026 update or any later update do not need to use a separate workaround. The company recommended installing the latest update because it includes important improvements and fixes, including the resolution for this installation failure.
For users who do not want to install the optional May 2026 update, Microsoft said the issue can be mitigated using Known Issue Rollback, a Windows feature that can reverse faulty changes delivered through Windows Update.
In enterprise environments managed by IT teams, administrators can address the issue by installing and configuring the relevant Group Policy. Microsoft also provides additional guidance for deploying Known Issue Rollback group policies through its support documentation.
