Microsoft is preparing to bring full MIDI 2.0 support to Windows, and the rollout is getting closer.
The company has released the production version of Windows MIDI Services to users in the Dev and Beta Insider channels, and it says the update will reach regular Windows installations in the next few months.
MIDI 2.0 offers several improvements over the original MIDI standard, including higher-resolution controls for more detailed musical expression, better two-way communication between devices, and fewer situations where musicians need to rely on third-party drivers. The updated format was first announced in 2019, but adoption across the industry has been slow. Apple added support for MIDI 2.0 on macOS in 2021, and Android followed in 2022, yet only a small number of devices today fully support the new standard.
Once the update arrives on Windows, developers and musicians will have a more modern and flexible system to work with, which could help boost the wider adoption of MIDI 2.0 hardware and software in the years ahead.
