Microsoft is phasing out the password management features of its Authenticator app.
Starting in July 2025, users will no longer be able to autofill saved passwords using the app. Instead, Microsoft recommends switching to Edge or another password manager.
The company will begin deleting saved payment info in July, followed by stored passwords in August. Users have until then to export their data if they don’t wish to use Edge. Microsoft has already stopped allowing new password entries in Authenticator as part of its move to centralize autofill features in the Edge browser.
While saved passwords will sync to your Microsoft account for use in Edge, you can set Edge as your default autofill provider through device settings. Those preferring other services should export their credentials before the cutoff date.
Launched in 2016 as a multifactor authentication app, Microsoft Authenticator added password storage in 2020. Although password support is ending, the app will continue to support passkeys, allowing secure login via biometrics or PINs.
More details on exporting passwords and configuring Edge can be found on Microsoft’s official website.
