Microsoft is rolling out new artificial intelligence features to Notepad and Paint with the latest updates for Windows 11 Insiders, further expanding AI integration across its built-in apps.
The updates are now available to users in the Canary and Dev Channels who have installed the latest app versions. Notepad version 11.2512.10.0 introduces streamed AI-generated results for its Write, Rewrite, and Summarize tools, allowing previews to appear instantly instead of waiting for a full response. Access to these features requires users to sign in with a Microsoft account.
“Whether generated locally or in the cloud, results for Write, Rewrite, and Summarize will start to appear quicker without the need to wait for the full response,” said Dave Grochocki, Principal Group Product Manager for Windows Inbox Apps.

Notepad is also expanding its lightweight formatting capabilities with additional Markdown support, including nested lists and strikethrough text. Users can access these formatting options through keyboard shortcuts, the formatting toolbar, or by writing Markdown syntax directly in documents. A new welcome screen has also been added to help users discover recent features, which appears on first launch and can be reopened later via a megaphone icon in the toolbar.
Meanwhile, Paint version 11.2512.191.0 introduces a new Coloring Book feature powered by AI, enabling users to generate coloring pages from text prompts. Multiple generated options can be added to the canvas, copied, or saved. This feature is exclusive to Copilot+ PCs and also requires Microsoft account authentication.

Paint has also gained a fill tolerance slider, giving users more control over how the Fill tool applies color to the canvas. Microsoft is encouraging Insiders to share feedback through the Windows Feedback Hub under the Apps category to help identify bugs and improve the experience.

Microsoft previously announced that AI-powered text generation, rewriting, and summarization tools would be available for free on Copilot+ PCs running Windows 11. Users who prefer not to use AI features can disable them in settings or uninstall the updated Notepad app and continue using the classic notepad.exe.
