Meta has announced that it will introduce new parental control tools to help parents manage how teens interact with AI characters on its platforms.
These features are expected to roll out next year and will let parents block certain AI characters or see what topics their teens are discussing.
In the coming months, parents will have the option to completely turn off AI chats for teens. This won’t include the main Meta AI chatbot, which will continue to offer only age-appropriate conversations. Parents who prefer more selective control can also choose to disable chats with specific AI characters. In addition, they’ll be able to view summaries of what topics teens are talking about with AI characters and Meta AI.
Meta said these features will first arrive on Instagram early next year and will be available in English for users in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. The company explained that it wants to make things easier for parents who are already dealing with many online safety challenges. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri and Meta AI head Alexandr Wang, Meta aims to give families simple and effective tools to manage how teens use new technologies like AI.
