Instagram, once known for sharing moments with friends and posting creative photos, is now facing a serious problem. The platform has been filling up with explicit content, including full nudity and even short clips showing sexual acts. What was once a place for art, photography, and social connection now feels more like an unfiltered adult site in many parts of the app.
This morning, after my usual cup of coffee, I opened Instagram like I always do — to check a few reels and updates from friends. However, this time, I was completely taken aback. As I scrolled through the Explore page, I came across posts showing full nudity and even short clips that looked like actual sex videos. I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing on a platform that was once about sharing photos, art, and creativity. It felt like Instagram had turned into an unfiltered adult site.

Anyone browsing the Explore page or looking through popular hashtags can easily come across posts that clearly violate Instagram’s own rules. Meta, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook, has strict community guidelines that ban nudity, pornography, and sexual activity. But in reality, these rules are not being properly enforced.
Many accounts openly post adult material, gain thousands of followers, and even promote links to external adult websites. This shows that Instagram’s moderation system is failing. Either the AI tools Meta uses to detect inappropriate content are not working properly, or human moderators are unable to keep up with the massive volume of uploads every day.
The biggest concern is how this affects young users. Millions of teenagers use Instagram daily to chat with friends, follow celebrities, and share their own content. Being exposed to such explicit material can seriously affect their mental and emotional well-being. Parents often assume that Instagram is safe compared to adult websites, but in truth, the kind of content now appearing on the platform would shock many of them.
Another issue comes from Instagram’s algorithm. The system is designed to push posts that get high engagement — more likes, comments, and saves. That means explicit posts can spread faster and reach even more people, including minors, simply because they attract attention. It’s a dangerous loop that keeps boosting the visibility of adult content instead of removing it.

Meta’s lack of strong action has also raised eyebrows. Despite spending large amounts of money on AI moderation and safety teams, the situation appears to be getting worse. It feels as if Meta is more focused on keeping users engaged than on protecting them, especially the younger audience that makes up a big part of Instagram’s user base.

Instagram urgently needs to take stronger action to clean up the platform. It should improve its moderation tools, remove explicit content faster, and make sure the app remains a safe space for everyone, especially teenagers. Until that happens, Instagram will continue moving away from its original purpose — a creative and friendly social network — and closer to something that could easily harm the very users it was meant to inspire.
