Meta is reportedly preparing to enter the smartwatch market again, nearly four years after it canceled its earlier wearable project.

According to recent reports, the company is developing a new smartwatch focused on health tracking and artificial intelligence features, with a possible launch later this year.

The new device, internally known as “Malibu 2,” would mark Meta’s renewed push into wearable technology. The company previously abandoned its first smartwatch plans in 2022 due to technical difficulties and cost-cutting efforts. If launched successfully, the new watch could become a central part of Meta’s broader hardware ecosystem, especially as it continues expanding in augmented and mixed reality products.

The smartwatch is expected to arrive alongside an updated version of Meta’s Ray-Ban Display smart glasses. These glasses, introduced last year, reportedly saw strong demand, forcing the company to pause its wider international rollout due to limited inventory. The Ray-Ban glasses currently rely on a neural wristband for gesture controls, and the upcoming smartwatch could potentially replace or enhance that system.

Meta’s renewed smartwatch effort would place it directly in competition with major players such as Apple, Google, Samsung, Garmin, and Fitbit. Reports also suggest Apple is working on AI-powered smart glasses that could launch next year, potentially intensifying competition in both wrist and eyewear devices.

In addition, Meta is reportedly developing mixed reality glasses under the codename “Phoenix,” although that project has been delayed until 2027 as the company reorganizes its AR and MR roadmap.
