Los Angeles County has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the popular gaming platform of failing to protect children from exploitation, grooming, and sexually explicit content.

The lawsuit, announced Thursday, claims that children in Los Angeles County were repeatedly exposed to harmful content because Roblox allegedly prioritized corporate profit over child safety. Officials argue that the company did not implement strong enough moderation systems to prevent predatory behavior on the platform.

The legal action was filed by County Counsel Dawyn R. Harrison on behalf of the People of the State of California. Harrison described the issue as more than a minor safety lapse, alleging the company gave predators “powerful tools” to target children. Hilda L. Solis, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, said Roblox failed in its responsibility to protect young users. Meanwhile, Rafael Carbajal, director of the county’s Department of Consumer and Business Affairs, stated that Big Tech companies must not place profits above children’s safety.

Roblox Responds

In response, Roblox Corporation strongly denied the allegations. The company said safety is central to its platform design and emphasized that users cannot send or receive images via chat — a feature aimed at reducing misuse. Roblox added that it actively monitors for harmful behavior, takes swift action against rule violations, and cooperates with law enforcement when needed.

The company also noted that protecting children online is an ongoing challenge, stating that “no system can be perfect,” but reaffirmed its commitment to improving safety measures.
