Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has acknowledged that the social media app needs further improvements to work properly on Apple’s new foldable iPhone Duo, following complaints about its interface on the device’s wider display.

Instagram was among the apps Apple highlighted as “Made for iPhone Duo,” a designation intended to identify apps optimized for the company’s first foldable iPhone. However, the label has not guaranteed a smooth experience for every app.

The Verge editor Nilay Patel recently pointed out problems with Instagram’s interface while testing the iPhone Duo. Mosseri subsequently responded to a user on Threads, agreeing that Instagram’s design needs to be reconsidered for the device’s larger screen.

The issue highlights the challenges developers face when adapting apps originally designed for traditional smartphones to foldable devices. The iPhone Duo’s larger inner display offers more room for content and controls, but simply expanding an existing interface does not necessarily make it easier to use.

Apple is encouraging developers to build apps that take full advantage of the device’s two displays and different folding positions. Its latest iPhone Duo software development tools allow compatible apps to use the expanded screen more effectively, while Apple is introducing a “Made for iPhone Duo” badge to help users identify optimized apps.

Instagram’s experience shows that app optimization involves more than filling the available screen space. Developers must also ensure that navigation, buttons and other interface elements remain properly positioned and usable across different screen layouts.

Apple says more app updates are expected throughout the year, giving developers additional opportunities to improve their experiences on the foldable device. It remains to be seen how quickly Instagram will address the reported issues and refine its interface for iPhone Duo users.
