If your Windows background keeps changing or you want to lock it to a specific image, you can stop users from modifying it by using a couple of simple methods. Here’s how to do it using Local Group Policy Editor and Registry Editor.
Method 1: Use Group Policy to Prevent Background Changes
This method is the easiest if you want to block users from changing the desktop background.
Steps:
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run command.
- Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
- Navigate to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization

- Double-click prevents changing the desktop background.
- Select Enabled.
- Click Apply, then OK.

That’s it! No need to restart your PC. When you check Settings > Personalization > Background, you’ll see the message:
“Some settings are managed by your organization”, and the background option will be grayed out.
Method 2: Set a Default Background with Group Policy
You can also force a specific background image for all users.
Steps:
- Press Windows key + R, type regedit, and click OK.
- Go to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop > Desktop - Double-click Desktop Wallpaper.
- Select Enabled.
- Under “Options,” type the full path of the image you want as the background.
- Choose the wallpaper style (e.g., Fill, Fit, Stretch).
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Restart your PC to apply changes.
This will fix the background, and users won’t be able to change it, even if they try through settings or syncing with a Microsoft account.
Whether you’re setting up a public computer, managing a shared family PC, or just want consistency on your desktop, locking the wallpaper is a great option. These methods ensure no one can change your selected background image, keeping your desktop just the way you like it.
