The HDMI Forum has officially released HDMI 2.2, which supports bandwidth of up to 96Gbps and enables ultra-high resolutions and refresh rates, including 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz
Among the notable improvements are support for uncompressed full chroma video formats, such as 8K@60Hz 4:4:4 and 4K@240Hz 4:4:4, with 10-bit and 12-bit color depth, offering better image fidelity for gaming, home theater, and professional AV applications.
A key addition is the introduction of the HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, which ensures reliable high-speed data transfer and enhances overall performance across devices. The HDMI Forum has also unveiled a new feature named “Ultra96” to indicate whether a product supports 64Gbps, 80Gbps, or 96Gbps bandwidth, compliant with the HDMI 2.2 spec.
To fully support HDMI 2.2 capabilities, manufacturers are encouraged to adopt the new Ultra96 HDMI® Cable, which supports up to 96Gbps. The existing Ultra High Speed HDMI® Cable remains valid for devices supporting up to 48Gbps.
“The HDMI Forum is proud to release the new HDMI 2.2 Specification to enable higher performance capabilities and features for exciting and immersive new solutions,” said Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum.
