Google is expanding its free, ad-supported streaming service with a new on-demand option that lets users choose what they want to watch instead of relying only on its lineup of always-on channels.
Google TV Freeplay now offers more than 10,000 movies and TV shows that users can watch whenever they want. The expanded library includes titles such as Lady Bird, Seventeen Again, and Hell’s Kitchen.
Alongside the new on-demand option, Google is also expanding Freeplay’s live TV lineup to more than 300 channels. The channels cover categories including news, sports, reality TV, true crime and other entertainment.
The expanded lineup includes channels such as World of Love Island, Yahoo! Sports Network, Bloomberg TV Plus and The Martha Stewart Channel.
The update comes as free, ad-supported streaming continues to grow, giving viewers an alternative to increasingly expensive subscription services. Google TV Freeplay now competes with free streaming platforms such as Tubi, The Roku Channel and Pluto TV, which also offer ad-supported movies and shows without requiring a paid subscription.
Google says it plans to continue updating the Freeplay library throughout the year, giving users more movies, shows and live channels to choose from.
