Google has confirmed that it will officially deprecate all URLs created with its goo.gl link shortener next month.
Starting August 25, 2025, any link in the https://goo.gl/* format will stop working and instead return a 404 error, marking the final shutdown of the once-popular service.
Google initially shut down the URL shortening tool in 2019, citing shifts in how users access online content. While the creation of new links was disabled years ago, existing goo.gl links have remained functional—until now. Last year, Google announced plans to begin phasing them out entirely, noting that usage has sharply declined. In a July 2024 blog post, the company revealed that over 99% of goo.gl links had no activity in the prior month.
To prepare users, Google began displaying warning pages when old shortened links were accessed, stating that they would stop working soon.
With just a month left until the official cutoff, users are encouraged to update or migrate their shortened URLs to an alternative service to avoid broken links.
