Elon Musk’s X is expanding its use of Community Notes beyond fact-checking.

The platform announced on Thursday that it’s testing a new feature designed to surface well-liked posts from users across different viewpoints. The experimental system builds on Community Notes’ “bridging algorithm,” which seeks consensus between contributors who typically disagree, a method originally developed to prevent biased fact-checking.

Instead of just flagging misinformation, selected Community Notes contributors will now be prompted to rate viral posts and answer questions about why they liked or didn’t like them. The goal is to identify content that resonates broadly, not just within echo chambers. By collecting diverse opinions, the algorithm aims to highlight posts that appeal across ideological lines.

The Community Notes X account explained the move as part of its effort to promote content that “bridges perspectives,” noting that the world often feels divided, yet agreement is possible — even on contentious topics. The company emphasized this is a pilot program, and feedback from users will shape its development, much like the original Community Notes rollout.

The fact-checking system itself has faced criticism for being too slow to respond to the fast pace of misinformation, but its approach has influenced other platforms, most notably Meta, which is now adopting a similar model.
