Google has shut down Project Mariner, its experimental AI feature that was built to complete tasks for users across the web.
The Project Mariner landing page now shows a message saying the feature was closed on May 4, 2026, and that its technology has moved into other Google products.
Google first introduced Project Mariner in December 2024. The company later updated the tool so it could handle up to 10 tasks at the same time. Over the past year, Google has gradually brought Mariner-powered features into its other AI tools, including Gemini Agent, which can help with actions like archiving emails or booking a hotel. Google has also added Project Mariner’s agent-style abilities to AI Mode, its AI-powered search experience.
Earlier this year, Google showed a new AI feature called “auto-browse,” designed to carry out multi-step tasks in Chrome, such as researching flight prices. Google has not said whether auto-browse is powered by Project Mariner, but it appears to be part of the company’s wider push to compete with agentic web browsing tools from OpenAI, Perplexity, and OpenClaw.
