Google has started rolling out its Call Recording feature to Pixel 6 and newer phones, especially for devices that do not support the newer AI-based Call Notes tool found in the Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series.

The update was first noticed by 9to5Google and is now becoming widely available.

Google originally revealed this expansion in September. According to Android Authority, the feature becomes available after updating the Phone by Google app and installing the latest November Pixel Drop. They confirmed it was working on devices like the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro Fold after both updates were applied.

Call Notes is an advanced feature that uses AI to transcribe phone calls and create summaries with the main points and follow-up tasks, but it is limited to the Pixel 9 and above. Call Recording is simpler. It lets users create audio recordings of their calls, which are saved directly on the phone. If you want written text, you’ll need a separate transcription app or service.

To use Call Recording, you can go to Settings, open Call Assist, and tap on Call Recording. You can manually start a recording at the beginning of a call, or set the Phone app to automatically record calls from selected numbers or from callers not stored in your contacts. You can also choose how long the recordings are kept, such as 7, 14, or 30 days, or you can keep them permanently.

The first time you turn the feature on, the app will download a short audio message that alerts everyone on the call that the recording is in progress. Google also explains how the recordings work and how they are stored during setup.

Pixel 6 and newer phones need to run Android 14 or higher to use Call Recording, while non-Pixel phones with the Google Phone app only need Android 9 or above.
