Google has announced that Chrome 138 will be the final version of its web browser to support devices running Android 8 (Oreo) and Android 9 (Pie).

Starting with Chrome 139, which is scheduled to launch in August, users will need to have Android 10 or newer to receive future updates.

While Chrome will still function on older Android versions, it will no longer receive security patches or feature updates, potentially putting users at risk over time. Android 8 and 9 were originally released in 2017 and 2018, and have since seen a significant decline in usage.

This move aligns with Google’s efforts to streamline Chrome’s performance and security standards by focusing on more recent versions of Android. Users still on older devices are encouraged to upgrade their operating system or switch to a newer device to continue receiving Chrome updates.

Google has not indicated any changes to Chrome availability through the Play Store, but it’s likely that version 139 and later will no longer install on devices running outdated Android versions.
